Make drip paintings with Sketch with Jeff Hopkins at the Guggenheim Museum.
There is a heatwave at the Guggenheim Museum, so Jeff Hopkins shares a drip painting project inspired by a melting popsicle. We learn that art can be an experiment as we drip paint onto vertical canvas and spray it with water.

Hi and welcome to "Sketch With Jeff."
As always, I'm really excited to see you.
We are in the middle of a heat wave here in New York City.
It is very hot, and I'm doing everything possible to try to keep cool, including squirting water on myself.
But it's just not working.
Everything is so hot and humid.
I don't know what to do.
Wait a second.
I have an idea.
I'll be right back.
Ah!
I have a Popsicle!
Popsicles really help to cool me off.
Traditionally, those really hot days in July and August are called the dog days of summer.
What do you think about that idea, dog?
-I'm sorry.
But don't blame me.
It's not my fault.
I'm really hot too.
Ohh!
-Wait a second.
My Popsicle has been dripping everywhere.
It's melting.
Aah!
It's dripped all over my shirt!
What is going on?
Wait a second.
These drips -- They give me an idea.
Maybe I should make an artwork using drips.
Hmm.
Let's see what we can do.
Come on.
♪♪ It's too hot to sketch, so this is perfect.
I found an old canvas and a box of old paints.
I'm going to put the canvas so that it's sitting upright.
I'm going to drip paint down the front of it, and that will be my art.
I'm making sure that I put paper underneath, because this paint will drip all over the floor.
So I want to cover that floor and not get paint all over it.
So here I am.
I'm dripping some paint.
I've got acrylic paint here.
This is a yellowish orange.
And ah!
There it is.
My little spray bottle.
I was using it to keep cool, so now I'm going to use it to make some art.
Let's just see what happens.
Remember -- Art can be an experiment.
You don't always have to know exactly what you're going to make.
You can have fun with materials and see what they do and how they respond to different techniques.
I'm just experimenting with spraying water in certain spots, and it actually helps the paint drip the more wet and watery it is.
Let me turn the canvas the other way.
The drips are going one way -- those orange and red and yellow drips -- but now let me try some other colors.
I'll drip some blue down from this side, and the drips are meeting each other.
The blue and the purple are now dripping into the yellow and orange and red colors.
This is actually a really fun experiment.
Spraying more water, letting those colors run into each other.
This is really fun.
This artwork is all about dripping and melting.
The artist recorded the sound of two 25-pound blocks of ice as it melted.
He was really interested in nature and natural objects and how they change over time.
My challenge for you is for you to make a drip painting.
You can use a canvas or a nice thick piece of paper.
Make sure you cover the surface below the painting so you don't drip on anything important.
But have some fun!
See what happens when you drip the paint down, if you squirt water on it.
Make it into a painting experiment.
